La eterna juventud de Mariano Ortega regresa a la selección nacional de balonmano. El lateral zurdo del CAI Aragón, que en abril próximo cumplirá 37 años, ha sido convocado por Juan Carlos Pastor para la concentración que la selección española celebrará en la última semana de octubre en Vigo.
La vuelta de Ortega significa una de las escasas novedades significativas en la apuesta de Pastor, que cuenta con el núcleo central de la selección que acudió al último Mundial, disputado en Alemania. El técnico ha citado a lo mejor del balonmano español, a excepción del lesionado Rolando Uríos. Integran la convocatoria los guardametas David Barrufet y Joseja Hombrados; los primeras líneas Demetrio Lozano, Íker Romero, Alberto Entreríos, Mariano Ortega, Jon Belaústegui, Chema Rodríguez y Raúl Entrerríos; los segundas líneas David Davis, Albert Rocas y Víctor Tomás; y los pivotes Carlos Prieto, Julen Aguinagalde y Rubén Garabaya.
El curso actual será especialmente intenso para el equipo nacional, con competiciones del rango de un Europeo, un Preolímpico y, caso de clasificarse, unos Juegos Olímpicos.
La Olimpiada significa un reto para Mariano Ortega, pues es la única competición de prestigio que no figura en su excepcional currículo.
